Kombucha and Cortisol: The Role of Ritual in a Fast-Paced World

Cortisol is a hot topic right now, with many of us feeling its effects in different ways - whether that’s physical exhaustion paired with restless sleep, sugar cravings, or a tight feeling of anxiety in our chest.

Cortisol is our primary stress hormone, and we do need it - to get up and respond to emergencies - but not every single day. When levels remain elevated for too long, we experience burnout, a feeling of depletion and imbalance, and are unable to rest properly.

This is where both internal balance and external ritual begin to matter.

The Gut–Stress Connection:

While no single solution can resolve cortisol-related challenges, there is a growing understanding of the role of the microbiome in regulating our endocrine system.

The gut produces around 90% of the body’s serotonin, often called the “feel-good” hormone. When the microbiome is out of balance, it can send distress signals to the brain, which in turn can increase cortisol production.

Research, including studies from the National Library of Medicine, suggests that fermented foods and drinks such as kombucha can help support this balance. Introducing beneficial bacteria into the gut may therefore help to reduce physiological stress responses.

Alongside this, antioxidants found in sparkling tea, particularly polyphenols, can help combat oxidative stress, which keeps the body in a prolonged state of “fight or flight”.

The Power of Ritual:

Supporting balance isn’t just about what happens internally; it’s also about how we structure our day. In a world that moves quickly, it’s easy to feel constantly “on.” Rituals, even the smallest ones, can help signal to the body that it’s safe to slow down.

Whether it’s stepping outside for fresh air, setting the table with intention, or taking a moment to pause before the evening begins, these actions create gentle transitions between the demands of the day and the rest that follows.

A Small Shift in What You Drink:

What we choose to drink can become part of that ritual.

We, of course, recommend integrating L.A brewery into your routine by pairing it with healthy food - replacing alcohol (a major cortisol trigger) with the added benefit of lowering your blood sugar levels in tandem.

Paired with nourishing food, consistent sleep, and enjoyable movement, small changes like this can begin to support a more balanced rhythm from within.

A glass poured in the early evening. A moment to pause before dinner. A way to unwind, without compromise.

A More Considered Rhythm:

Lowering cortisol isn’t about one single action; it’s about a combination of supportive habits, both internal and external.

Fermented foods, whole nutrition, rest, and mindful rituals all play a part. And often, it starts with something small. A small step, perhaps. But one that helps bring you back into balance gently, and over time.
